Investigating My Life
by Aubrey Elliott, Jr., and Janis Williams
Aubrey Elliott, Jr., is a small man, and probably the first thing that comes to mind when guessing what he did for a living is not “FBI agent.” But that’s what he was, and he has apprehended two Most-Wanted criminals, sought out World War II deserters, and fought the infamous Chicago gangs of the 1940s. He joined the Bureau when it was brand new.
But he came from small-town Texas. Aubrey is heir to a rich family lineage rooted in the gentle hills of central Texas, near Belton and Temple. Over time, as he moved from Troy, to Belton, to university and marriage and law school, through his years in the F.B.I., and later in banking, through the birth of his children and many years as a family man and all the way to the present, Aubrey's connection to that lineage has continued in ways so subtle he has barely noticed. It's simply that his appreciation for the people whose lives shaped his own has grown deeper through the years—and his curiosity about them has gradually increased.
After he retired and had time for reflection, Aubrey began to think about history and its effect on his life and the lives of his children. Though many people can only comprehend their stories as beginning with their own birth, Aubrey casts his eye farther back.
The area of Central Texas to which he has now returned was home to both sides of his family. Today, at age ninety-three, Aubrey Elliott, Jr., the only surviving member of his family of origin, investigates the trajectory of his own life.
"Jan Williams did a masterful job on this book. It is exactly what my children and grandchildren wanted, and I was happy to agree to it. I have great respect for Jan’s humanity and professionalism."
—Aubrey Elliott, Jr.
